Also other synthetic fibres too.<\/p><p><strong>WHY?<\/strong><\/p><p>Plastic is created by fossil fuels (crude oil &amp; natural gas). The extraction of these is very destructive to our planet but also these are a finite resource. They will eventually run out; making them not sustainable!<\/p><p>On top of this, synthetic materials shed plastic fibres when washed. So they slowly are polluting the planet in the form of micro plastics. This is so apparent that a scientists took snow samples from Mt Everest and found traces of plastic fibres in the snow in as remote parts as the summit! This is because it uses up plastic that has already been created and repurposes it. This is good as it removes ones that were intended to go to landfill or the ocean reducing the impact the plastic would have had.<\/p><p><strong>So why is it bad?<\/strong><\/p><p>When plastic is recycled it is not a 1:1 conversion from the previous product it came from. Some of it can't be salvaged and will end up being either burnt (releasing toxic fumes) or end up in landfill and the ocean. Along with this plastic always becomes a lesser grade than it was before so there is a limit to how many times it can be recycled until it can no longer be recycled anymore.<\/p><p>Along with this, these recycled plastic clothing still shed plastic microfibres just like regular synthetic clothing. Let me explain...<\/p><p>Where it's true that there is no plastic in 100% cotton clothing it doesn't mean it comes without its problems. Simply put Cotton is a very thirsty plant. As it can be grown with a third of the water used in regular cotton farming. As the name suggests these are created from water meaning they are 100% natural. and non-toxic. The way they are printed onto the material is also beneficial too. Unlike PVC inks these dye the fabric they are printed on; so they will not crack, peel or flake. The benefits of doing this is firstly that the factory in India is run entirely off solar power meaning all our clothing is made with green energy. It's also where we make our clothes packaging as we turn the negative of losing 2% of the cotton from offcuts and repurpose it by combining it with paper to make the packaging we use more durable.<\/p><p>We next send it to the Isle of Wight, UK, where again this factory is also powered by solely renewable energy (this time it's wind powered). But for all the previous issues mentioned about plastic it shouldn't be used! To summarise: it's not sustainable, bad for the planet and not necessary as there are alternatives out there which we'll mention below.<\/p><p><strong>Recyclable Plastic Packaging isn't good!<\/strong><\/p><p>This is a common greenwashing trick used by companies that try to leave their packaging as plastic. But why is it bad?<\/p><p>Firstly, 90% of all plastic doesn't get recycled and ends up instead in landfill and the ocean. So just because it can be recycled doesn't mean it will be (and likely won't be). But, if it does get recycled it's not particularly great either. As mentioned before, it isn't a 1:1 conversion when it get recycled, lots of it will be lost and will be burnt or end up polluting the environment. Instead, send them a <strong>message<\/strong> or <strong>email<\/strong> asking them why they are not doing it. At the end of the day, companies are here to <strong>serve the customers<\/strong>' needs so if enough speak up they'll be forced to listen and take action.<\/p><p>With <strong>sustainability<\/strong> on the rise and there being <strong>alternatives<\/strong> easily available that allow us to be sustainable we should do our best to do these things for the planet. This goes for companies too!
